Mary Beth, A Lesson In Living

Sometimes you are lucky enough in this life to meet someone who profoundly influences the way you live, think and love. Mary Beth was one of those rare people who understood the true meaning of life. While the rest of us search aimlessly, Mary Beth quietly pointed the way. Mary Beth died yesterday at age 43 from a cruel cancer that could not take her spirit, kill her love for others or rob her of dignity. To the very end, Mary Beth lived the life she wanted and laughed in the face of death.

I did not meet Mary Beth until shortly before her diagnosis three years ago. I can not say I knew her intimately but I grew to treasure the brief moments we had together. Always kind, always putting others ahead of her own needs, always ready to laugh, always there for her two children no matter what, never selfish, facing each day bravely and with determination: this is how I think of Mary Beth.

I can think of no better way to honor my friend than to follow her example as best I can. First, I vow to finally get that colonoscopy I’ve stubbornly refused to consider; that would make her very happy. Next, I will try to live each day to the fullest, without complaining about the hundreds of little things we all gripe about every day. Every day was precious to Mary Beth and she endured suffering beyond my imagination without complaint. Last I will love those around me a little more, a bit deeper and appreciate them for who they are. They truly might not be here tomorrow.

Even if you did not know Mary Beth, I hope you can learn from her example. Live the life you’ve been given and don’t let it slip away. Laugh often. Embrace each day, rainy or sunny. Smile. Help others. Take care of your precious health. Love someone.

It is not going to be easy saying goodbye to a dear. So I simply will say I love you and will always remember your caring and love for others. I will see you again.

So well put, Lisa. She spoke so highly of you and your children. She valued the examples in parenting she gained from you (even without you knowing it) & shared them with me.
