Making Yourself A Priority
[ Post by Lisa Tedder ][ Post on May 17, 2013 ][ In For new Mom's, Medical and Health Information ]
Wow, what a week! I have been pulled in so many different directions that I hardly got anything done. Several appointments were crammed in there, dentist with the kids, end of school awards, work and tonight, supper club with friends. The stress level has been pretty high as I had some pressing jobs to get done, like payroll, bank deposits and writing assignments. It can be hard to juggle work and family commitments and still squeak in your workout but I managed all week.
Women often don’t make themselves a priority. They go to work and take care of the family first before taking time for themselves. I am often guilty of the same thing but I’m going to harp on the necessity of taking care of yourself today. If the caretaker gets sick, she won’t be able to take care of anyone so keep that in mind. Review this list and make a point to take care of those things you’ve been putting off for too long.
1. Gynecologist. When was the last time you had a checkup? If it has been more than two years, make an appointment today. Have you at least been doing self breast exams? Many diseases can be cured if caught early. Also, did you notice that Angelina Jolie had a double mastectomy? I admire her honesty in revealing her medical problem in hopes it would get other women’s attention.
2. Dentist. When did you last have your teeth cleaned and checked? You should schedule your visit at the same time you schedule your children’s. Left untreated, some dental problems can affect your heart as well, giving you another important reason to see your dentist at least once a year.
3. Gym. When was your last workout? Do you at least make time to walk for 15 minutes 3 or 4 times a week? Exercise is important to your physical and mental well being and helps you cope with stress. Don’t say you are too tired and skip exercise to collapse on the couch at night. A brief workout will actually make you feel more energetic and mentally alert immediately. And if you have time for Facebook and surfing the net, you have time to exercise!
4. Haircut. Yes, proper grooming is important for your self image and a happier, more positive attitude. While doing my own workout recently, I watched a story of a mother who won a makeover for Mother’s Day. She had been nominated by her adult son because she hadn’t had a haircut in 40 years and wore sloppy old sweatshirts. He wanted to see her take care of herself. The result was amazing and the woman was crying tears of happiness. Her knee length hair and worn out look was replaced by a beautiful, smiling, stylish woman. It is an important lesson that your children see you taking care of yourself as well. You are an adult who matters, not a house elf. If this sounds like you, find a hair stylist today!
These are just a few suggestions to get you started but if there is anything else that has been bothering you, blurry eyesight, constant headaches, not eating right, overwhelming stress, stop and take care of it today. Martyrs often die for their cause but then they aren’t around to fight another day!
